Texas Flood
Dozens of major flooding events have occurred in Texas throughout the years, causing immense infrastructural damage and loss of hundreds of lives. A recount of the Texas flood history would draw your attention to the causes of flooding in the state – from unnamed storms accompanied by heavy downpour in the beginning of the 20th century to record-breaking rains in the second half, including tropical storms of the category of Alison. Texas Flood History
Heavy rains, measuring 20-25 inches, drenched the whole of Texas during the El Nino year of 1913, causing 180 deaths from drowning.
A tropical storm that originated in the Bay of Campeche lashed San Antonio, causing severe flooding in 1921 with 39.7 inches of rainfall, drowning 51 people.
In June 1935, multiple rain events resulted in severe flooding on the Colorado and Nueces Rivers in May on Seco Creek. Another flooding event occurred in December of the same year on Buffalo Bayou that washed out downtown Houston. .
The May 1949 flood is the worst in the history of Fort Worth. Clear Fork of the Trinity River broke its levees and spilled into the city. This photo shows an overview of a soaked Fort Worth on May 17, 1949.
Heavy rains in September 1952 brought life to a standstill in central Texas, causing loss of 5 lives and destruction of property.
Hurricane Alice struck the Rio Grande Valley in May 1954, carrying 35 inches of rainfall.
The May 1965 flood inundated San Antonio River, causing damages worth $1 million.
Hurricane Beulah struck Arroyo City in September 1967, bringing along massive downpour and inundating bridges, roads, homes, fences, and livestock all over south Texas west of Victoria.
Heavy rains caused flood in Texas’ central part in May 1970, in which San Marcos area was severely hit.
Torrential rains caused large-scale flooding in south central Texas, causing flash flood in and around the San Antonio and Guadalupe rivers.
In July 1979, tropical storm Claudette hit southeast Houston, dropping 43 inches of rain and forcing over 3,000 residents to abandon their homes in Brazoria County.
Flooding events continued in the following years – 1981, 1987, 1989, 1990, 1994, 1997, 1998, 2001, 2002, 2013, and 2015
Dousing storms swept away roads, people, and property in Texas in 2015, writing heart-wrenching tales of devastation and massive loss of life & property.
